Shooting at Howe Park Leaves 4 Shot in the Arden-Arcade Area of Sacramento

Sacramento County Sheriff's Office investigators are probing a shooting that occurred Saturday evening at Howe Park at the time deputies were breaking up an unauthorized event of a crowd of several hundred.

Prior to the Shooting

Deputies initially responded to the park around 6:30 Saturday evening after learning of individuals possibly carrying concealed weapons. Shortly after, a second call came in mentioning a potential altercation taking place within the park grounds.

A law enforcement helicopter was sent to survey the area but found nothing to substantiate the fight report. Despite this, deputies found that hundreds of people had gathered without authorization without authorization.

The Shooting Itself

Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies began the process of clearing the park by positioning themselves around the crowd and using their vehicle PA systems directing the assembled crowd to vacate the area. Around 15 minutes were given for the gathering to break up.

Just as the crowd began to move that upwards of 20 gunshots rang out. The shots triggered a stampede. Officers wasted no time in searching for victims.

Four People Shot

Altogether, four individuals were identified as having gunshot wounds. All four — a group of one female and three male victims ranging in age through their in their early to late twenties — were brought to nearby hospitals. Medical personnel stated that two of the four had injuries classified as immediate, one sustained moderate wounds, and one suffered minor injuries. Fortunately, all four victims survived and were stable.

The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department also responded and assisted with medical triage the injured at the scene.

Evidence at the Scene

The center of the incident was confirmed to have read more been concentrated adjacent to Cottage Way close to the local Home Depot on the 2200 block of Howe Avenue. Law enforcement investigators discovered more spent casings along Cottage Way. Round impacts were noted in the iron perimeter fence bordering the nearby Home Depot. This evidence pointed to that a shooter had been sending rounds south from Cottage Way in the direction of the Home Depot store. The Home Depot was secured under a brief lockdown while law enforcement worked the area. Crime scene technicians and detectives worked tirelessly well into the night.

Suspect Information

Information obtained over police scanner frequencies indicated that a Kia vehicle had been stopped in Solano County California. Four individuals were held for questioning. Deputies were traveling to Solano County to transport the detainees for processing in Sacramento County. Video that was reviewed made clear that two shooters had been involved.
